Margaret caught Stephen just before he ducked out the front door. “I’m taking Herman out to meet guys,” she said as she descended the stairs.

Stephen laughed, “No you’re not.”

“Not for her, for me.”

“Fine, but you’re only allowed to bring one home,” he said. “But seriously, what are you up to?”

“I’m getting us both dolled up, and we’re going out dancing. Before you take out her anywhere nice, she needs to know what it’s like to have the opposite sex go gaga over her. Otherwise, she’s forever going to feel insecure when she’s with you.”

“Okay, fair enough. I’ll take Nina back out to the island one last time. I’ve cast enough fertility spells all over it to ensure triplets. If that doesn’t work—”

“Let’s not even go there,” Margaret interrupted.

“Anyway, she’s expecting her period tomorrow, so this is my last chance.”

“You know how slim the chances are of getting her pregnant the day before her period, right?”

“Of course. But I’m desperate. What time will you come home? I want to be here when you do.”

“I’ll have Herman home by two, Dad,” she teased.

“Intact.”

“Of course.”

Stephen huffed out a mirthless laugh and bit his nail.

“It’ll all be over soon,” Margaret reassured him. “Then you and Herman can have each other all to yourselves.”

“If she stays. I’m trying to figure out how I can convince her that I can fuck Nina and not feel anything.”

“It’s not going to be easy. It takes experience to really understand that there’s a difference between sex and making love.”

“Hopefully she’ll let me show her.”

“When will you give Herman her surprise?” asked Margaret, changing the subject.

“I’m going out to get it now. I’ll give it to her tomorrow. I’m going to take her for a long ride out by the water.”

“That will be romantic.” Margaret sighed. “Oh Stephen, every woman needs a man like you.”

“I wonder if you wouldn’t all be better off without a man like me,” he said as he turned to go.
